Job Description:
Lifeguards in the Swim Corps program play a critical role in maintaining a safe, supportive, and inclusive aquatic environment for all participants. As part of Rising Tide Effect’s paid, earn-while-you-learn workforce development program for NYCHA youth, lifeguards actively supervise pool activities while developing leadership, professionalism, and career-ready skills in aquatics and the blue economy.
Lifeguards are responsible for enforcing safety protocols, responding to emergencies, and modeling calm, confident behavior on deck. This role is ideal for individuals interested in water safety, community service, and future careers in aquatics or related fields.
Lifeguarding hours would be from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Key Responsibilities:
Actively monitor pool and aquatic areas to ensure swimmer safety
Enforce pool rules and water safety protocols consistently
Identify and prevent unsafe behavior or hazardous conditions
Respond quickly and effectively to emergencies
Perform water rescues when required
Administer CPR, AED, and First Aid as needed
Maintain a professional, calm, and alert presence at all times
Communicate clearly with participants, instructors, and staff
Support a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment
Minimum Requirements:
Must be legally allowed to work in the state of New York
Must have a current Lifeguard Certification
Must have a current CPR Certification
Additional Preferences:
AED and / or First Aid certification
Strong swimming ability and physical stamina
Ability to remain calm, focused, and decisive in high-pressure situations
Commitment to safety, responsibility, and accountability
Reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
Ability to follow protocols and take direction
Prior experience in aquatic settings, youth programs, or group supervision
Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
Interest in careers in aquatics, public safety, or the blue economy
Leadership presence and confidence on deck
